History
Habitat for Humanity of Valencia County is located in Valencia County, a rural community of 65,000 people located approximately 25 miles South of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our subdivision development, Pasitos, has about 120 Habitat homes built for families seeking afforable housing. The subdivision is in proximity to the University of New Mexico - Valencia County, Valencia High School, Manzano Vista Middle School, and two new grade schools. HfH-VC hosts enthusiastic volunteers year round, including AmeriCorps NCCC, Collegiate Challenge, RV Care-A-Vanners, and along with local Churches, Businesses and Civic Groups.
Habitat for Humanity of Valencia County affiliate began operations in 1994 to meet the needs of very low income families by building sustainable and afforadable housing and to eliminate sub-standard homes in Valencia County through rehabilitation. Requirements for qualification include a willingness to "partner" with HfH-VC in building their homes, maintaining their home after occupancy, supporting neighborhood building activities and making their mortgage payments. Their participation consists of providing 300 "sweat equity" hours in buiding their homes or in assisting in building their neighbor's home. HfH-VC, through its programs, offers familes a hand-up, not a hand out.
Currently, HfH-VC and the Isleta Pueblo Housing Authority have teamed together to build 18 new homes on the Pueblo. This exciting program not only provides affordable homes for Tribal members but has created new jobs for the Pueblo as well. These new homes are built with lava blocks, a combination of lava pumice and concrete. The pumice is quarried from ancient volcanoes on Pueblo lands, crushed and formed into blocks. This process brings together ancient concepts of earth and spirit into each home.
Habitat for Humanity of Valencia County also serves the Pueblo of Isleta and Valencia County with a Homeowner Occupied Rehabilitation Program. Under this program, homeowners living in dangerous and unsafe conditions may have their homes brought up to current building code standards under this program. So far this program has rehabilitated more than 30 homes throughout Valencia County and the Pueblo of Isleta.
Habitat for Humanity of Valencia County is proud to partner with HUD, United Way of Central New Mexico and the Combined Federal and State employee Giving Campiagns.
